About
Wagamama needed a new website, acting as a digital hub for a number of services. They also required a new digital look and feel. This meant creating both functional UX for multiple services and modernising their look and feel.
Pitching the idea
I started this project at pitch stage, helping create and present the content that won the work. We demonstrated two design variations, exploring classic and modern Japanese styles and dinning aesthetics. We also used motion in key places to bring food to life.
I demonstrated how we could then use design systems to deliver this efficiently to their multiple development suppliers.
Finding the right approach
Having won the work we needed to finalise the creative approach. The old online brand was very dated while we adopted fonts and colours, all other digital aesthetics needed creating.
We ended going for a blended approach of modern brutalist design for the main elements, contrasted with friendly imagery, animation and copy.
Building the Design System
The Wagamama website was to act as a hub for many services, including menus, restaurant finders, recipes and eventually an online community. This created a large amount of components that were often quite technical.
I produced a system that was cleanly maintained, efficient and annotated thoroughly to streamline the design to development process.
